Heed Finland on World Health Day

World Health Day is commemorated annually on April 7th to heighten awareness regarding health-related issues and to foster a unified understanding of health as a fundamental human right. It serves as a moment for contemplation on the persistent health challenges worldwide and the progress made by the international community in addressing them. This year’s theme, “My health, my right,” resonates strongly amidst the escalating health disparities and prevalent diseases, underscoring the importance of health in societal development and its transcendent impact across borders.

HEED Finland, established in 2018 as a non-governmental organization, is dedicated to enhancing the health of immigrants and refugees in Finland through culturally sensitive, action-oriented, and low-threshold approaches. Since its inception, the organization has actively engaged in various health promotion initiatives in partnership with public, third sector, and grassroots organizations, targeting the health concerns of immigrant communities. Notably, the organization’s initiative, the first of its kind in Finland, Chronic Disease Awareness Month (CHRODA), exemplifies its commitment to fostering better health outcomes for all residing in Finland.

Adhering to the belief that “Knowledge is Power,” HEED Finland designs its activities to enable participants to gain knowledge about health-related issues, enabling informed decision-making while prioritizing preventive measures. These activities encompass health seminars, webinars, community outreach efforts, individual and group counseling sessions, as well as sporting activities.

In line with advocating for global health improvement, HEED Finland underscores individual accountability for personal health, emphasizing that a healthier world commences at the individual level. Encouraging individuals to assume control over their health, the organization advocates for adopting healthier lifestyle choices, encompassing dietary habits, physical activity, sleep patterns, stress management, regular health assessments, and screenings.

As we contribute to World Health Day this year, there are various ways to participate, such as engaging in social media campaigns and disseminating information using hashtags like #worldhealthday and #myhealthmyright. Additionally, individuals can organize events, engage in discussions with friends or family regarding World Health Day, contribute to health-promoting organizations, or volunteer at health-related events. A personal reflection on lifestyle and health habits and striving for individual improvement aligns with the overarching global campaign towards enhanced global health outcomes.
